You may be wondering if cyberbullying is happening on a “professional” site like LinkedIn and if there is any point in writing about it. Bullying is well and alive and the perpetrators hide behind keeping all discussions on LinkedIn “professional” and try to silence others. These self-appointed LinkedIn gatekeepers and information moderators have come up with a “moral code for LinkedIn.” They have a strict standard that every discussion has to adhere to.
For example, mentioning your religious beliefs is a no go zone. They are quick to point out that any religious stuff most is posted and discussed only in the groups that deal with these types of topics.
The main goal of this censorship is to keep the professional environment on LinkedIn professional. The reasoning is that religion is a private matter and it has no place in any professional milieu. Therefore keep your religious convictions to yourself and do not push them down the throats of others.
I find this type of reasoning extremely troubling because of the following:
There are no neutral human beings. Everybody has a belief system that influences their worldview, including their professional interactions with others. There are two main belief systems that all humans fall under; these are the naturalistic and the theological worldviews. The naturalistic world view beliefs that everything is the outcome of natural forces alone. According to this worldview, all human affairs are shaped and controlled solely by natural forces. The theological worldview beliefs in the supernatural and Divine influence in our affairs.
Our belief system cannot be separated from our interaction with others. There is no such thing as separation of our worldview from our actions. Those calling for a religious free “professional” environment are indirectly affirming and promoting a naturalistic based professional environment. They are claiming that their worldview is the best and the only one that has been sanctioned to be present in the market place.
Our output and productivity is influenced by our worldview. Those trying to hush faith voices have concluded that a person’s faith has zero contribution to their professional productivity. This is a biased and unfounded assertion. How did they arrive this conclusion? What makes them think that a person’s belief has nothing to do with professional life?
A few years ago, I was employed to work on a remolding project. The owner of the house will leave me on the job alone to go supervise other projects and I will spend most of the day working alone. After a couple of days, he told me that I was different from other people he had employed in the past. He noted that I accomplish a lot in his absence. In contrast to me, the other workers he had employed in the past would stop working when he went to a different location for supervision. The other workers will pretend to be working hard when they heard the sound of his truck.
He asked me why I was different. I told him that I was a Christians and according to the following instruction by Paul the apostle which says, “Don't work only while being watched, in order to please men, but as slaves of Christ, do God's will from your heart. Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” I made my boss understand that God was my first boss and that in order to obey God, I must put in my best. Since God sees me at all times, I do not need my boss to be present for me to do what he is paying me to do.
This is just one example of how my Christian faith permeates my professional life. Millions are spent each year to motivate employees to be productive, I think those that believe in being rewarded first by God and secondly by their employers get up each day ready to put in their best at work. What is wrong in being inspired and motivated by your faith?
You can help stop cyberbullying by speaking out on behave of others that are being hushed down. This can be done by the comments you post in response to undue harsh criticism.
Be honest about your worldview and do not be afraid or ashamed to affirm it when need be. This is an honest and noble thing to do. After all, each and every one of us is influenced by a naturalistic or theological worldview and these worldviews form the basis of our belief system and eventually influence our professional interaction with others.
The IEM APPROACH is a holistic way of life; the physical and spiritual must be in synergy for real, lasting, and sustainable success.
