You are going to be discouraged and how you handle it will determine your level of success. Do you have a business idea? Are you on a diet? Are you working on making some changes in you? Are you striving to be better? Do you have innovative ideas? Are you reading this post? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I guarantee you that you will face discouragement sooner or later. Those who are closest to you will be your greatest source of discouragement.
They think they know you better than yourself. Your family members and close friends have interacted with you for a long time and know your strengths and weakness. Since most humans like to dwell on the negative, these people who are close to you are not exempt. They focus on your weakness and on why you cannot do what you want to do. They draw a conclusion about the outcome of the battle before the first shot is fired. When Steven Sasson invented the digital camera in 1975 his managers at Kodak discouraged him. You already know the end of the story, the digital camera prevailed and Kodak is out of business. Take the advice from those closest to you with a good dose of salt, for they may "kill your baby before it is born".
They want to protect you and prevent you from failing. Let us face it, there is nobody that has not had any failures in their life. Unfortunately, most people will rather focus on the "negative outcome of the failure than the positive outcome". They seem to forget what Paul of Tarsus says, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." All this means ALL; the good, the bad, and the ugly. All things work together for good. This implies failure is not to be avoided but embraced and utilized. Those closet to you may want to prevent you from failing, but they are preventing you from growing.
They want to encourage you. How can encouragement be discouragement? When a close friend or family member points out the dangers involved and the possibility of you even getting killed, they are encouraging you to preserve your life. They have good intentions, but if you listen to them you will never succeed. You must count the cost and pay the price if you want to be successful. Do not let anybody talk you out of paying the price.
