How to experience the freeing power in the Truth

For the past couple of weeks, our discussion has been focused on a fundamental and extremely important statement made by Jesus Christ of Nazareth more than Two thousand years ago as he walked the dusty roads in Judea.  He said, “You shall know the Truth and the truth will set you free”. Like it or not there is absolute truth and it is to your best interest to find it. You MUST find it no matter how expensive it is. The reason is that when the truth is violated the consequences are catastrophic and in some cases, it can result in death.

We have already seen that truth applies to ALL areas of our lives, that is the body, soul, and spirit and it is to your best interest to find out the truth in each of these areas. It is about you and nobody else. It is about your wellbeing and your freedom. It is you that will benefit from knowing the truth. You and you alone have the responsibility of knowing the truth. Nobody can do it for you. The truth has to be known and this knowing involves intimacy with the truth and action when this knowledge is acquired.

In so much as we may be made to understand by some that everybody has their own truth and that we can do as we please, this reasoning is faulty and will not stand close scrutiny. For example, if you insist on taking an aspirin to treat a bacterial infection, instead of an antibiotic you will die. You will be making a crucial mistake because you are violating the truth about your illness. You may argue that your illness might have been misdiagnosed. If the illness is misdiagnosed, it does not negate the fact that a properly trained medical professional will not tell you what is wrong with you. That is why it is crucial for you to seek the truth and not settle on how you feel or what comes naturally. You cannot be the source of your own truth and cannot make your own truth as circumstances around you change.

According to John Maxwell, “The biggest gap in the world is the gap between knowing and doing.”

For the truth to set your free, knowing MUST be followed by doing. You must act on all the knowledge that you have acquired for it to bring the change you desire.  If you go to the doctor and your illness is diagnosed, and medication prescribed you MUST take your medication for healing to take place. If you do not take your medication it implies that the knowledge of the diagnosis and even the prescription of the mediation to treat your illness is not going to benefit you. Death is still a possibility despite the fact that you know what is wrong with you.

For the truth to set you free you have to ACT on it. Unfortunately, action requires some work and most people are scared of the hard work involved. This should not be so.  Rolling up your sleeves and doing the work required by the truth is worth it. You can do this by considering the following:

  • Remove the excuses. Action is hampered in most cases when people focus on legitimate reasons for inaction. One sure way to deal with this is by removing these legitimate excuses. For example, your doctor tells you that if you do not start exercising your health will continue to deteriorate. This truth shocks you and you decide to something about it but you cannot afford a gym membership or some particular piece of equipment that you think will make exercising easier for you. Forget about the gym, it is not the only place where you can exercise. You can go out for a walk, you can go to the community park; you can go up and downstairs in your apartment complete. There are many ways to exercise. Try not to park your car close to your destination when you go out to shop or run errands. Studies have shown that you need just 30 minutes of walking each day and your health will improve immensely. You do not necessarily have to walk these 30 minutes in one stretch. You can divide them in 10 minute slots. The bottom line is that you do something.

  • Forget about the money. I did not say money is not important. I am saying that you should not allow the lack of money to prevent you from acting on the truth that will change your marriage. The counselor might have told you to spend quality time with your wife and you think only an expensive cruise will do the magic. The more you wait the more your relationship deteriorates. It must not necessarily have to be expensive for it to meet a need.  It has been said that children know you love them by the time you spend with them. How many parents are guilty of working extra hours for the kids, when all they need is you? No wonder  you have bought stuff for them, but it seems  not to be working

  • Accept that it is hard work. If action came naturally, we would not be talking about this. Come to grips with the fact that you need to roll up your sleeves and get down and dirty for you to be free. Addictions are hard to get out of, for the strain on the body is unbearable, but you have to do it if you want to be free. The withdrawal symptoms with not kill you. Seek help and face whatever is holding you back squarely. Just do it!

  • Focus on the reward. Freedom is worth its weight in gold. Throughout the course of history, millions have placed their lives on the line to break free from tyrannical governments.  You have to focus on the reward that awaits you when you do the hard work. When the chains of drug addictions are broken, you will be happy that you have become clean.
