“The United States Constitution has proven itself the most marvelously elastic compilation of rules of government ever written” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt
The American Constitution is a road map to the benefits of being a US citizen, and all immigrants are strongly encouraged to read it. You cannot defend what you do not know; that is why learning about the constitution will help the continuation of our way of government.
There is no excuse for not reading and understanding the basic tenets of the Constitution of the United States of America. It is a small document and will take you less than 30 minutes to read, but a lifetime to digest and apply. It is tempting to jump over this as many immigrants do, but don’t try to participate in the political debate without any road map.
The United States is a republic; that is why when you read the constitution, the word “democracy” is not mentioned in it. But the constitution created a limited representative republic to avoid some of the pitfalls of a “pure democracy” where the majority can easily abuse the rights and privileges of minorities, an observation that the founders were aware of, and did all to prevent the country from imploding, as other past democracies had.
